October Featured Skater: Wreck-It Ratch
Derby name: Wreck-It Ratch
Number: #0621
Position(s): Blocker? Not sure, haven’t played in a bout yet, lol.
How long have you been playing derby?
I started as fresh meat a little over a year ago.
How did you get started playing derby?
One of my coworkers years ago mentioned fresh meat boot camp and my husband encouraged me to try roller derby.
What's your favorite thing about it?
The people and community, finally a chance to wear my costumes!
How did you pick your derby name/number?
I was inspired by the Disney character Wreck it Ralph as I also pose with my arms and am densely built. My number comes from when I was in the Marine Corps, my MOS was 0621 a field radio operator. It reminds me that I can do hard things.
What's your proudest accomplishment on the track?
During practice we were scrimmaging and I was the jammer. I successfully counter blocked someone that was coming up to snipe me and continued without falling!
What's your gnarliest injury?
As mentioned before I am densely built and luckily this has not happened yet. I would have a hard time emotionally when I felt like I wasn’t progressing as fast as the other skaters who started at the same time as me and I have cried multiple times on the track. I pulled through with some encouragement from my fellow skaters and I hope to be a source of support to newer skaters on the team to not give up!
How would you describe your derby playing style?
As someone who just learned how to skate efficiently last year and due to being densely built, if I get put in as a jammer, I usually just push through. I am hoping with more time and practice, I will develop the skills and confidence to add more finesse and controlled technique. If I am blocking, I do my best to listen to my teammates, have awareness, and be solid yet flexible.
What are your goals for the season?
To pass my assessment and play in bouts! If I’m not quite there yet, I’ve really enjoyed announcing on our Twitch livestream!
What do you like to do in your free time?
Play video games, hang out with my cats and friends, occasionally make reels on social media. I’m hoping to hone my skills as an aspiring amateur hibachi chef.
If you had a song play every time you walked into a room, what would it be?
