May Featured Skater: Mother Fury

Derby name: Mother Fury

Number: #1968

Position(s): Blocker/Pivot

How long have you been playing derby?

This is my 4th season.

How did you get started playing derby?

I saw a flyer at YeeHaw and met Sleia at Meet the Mountains where she assured me her ankle boot wasn’t due to derby.

What's your favorite thing about it?

The dichotomy of how incredibly humbling and empowering it is. I also love going to battle alongside my teammates against other teams after weeks of going up against each other at practices.

How did you pick your derby name/number?

I’m named after my mom car: ‘68 Plymouth Fury station wagon. And I’m a homeschooling mom of 5.

What's your proudest accomplishment on the track?

Not letting my mom get to mark off “Fury gets a penalty” on her game day bingo card.

What's your gnarliest injury?

AC joint separation at practice. Couldn’t move my arm the next day.

How would you describe your derby playing style?

I try to always be doing something useful on the track. Also, like Mister Rogers said, “Look for the helpers.”

What are your goals for the season?

Keep cutting back on penalties.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I read about 30 books a year, which requires leaving Honey Punch on “read” when she texts, wanting to get late night drinks. I also coach our junior team and travel whenever I can.

If you had a song play every time you walked into a room, what would it be?
